Pattern making - T shirt or dress?
Creating a classic V neck top from a simple, draft it yourself pattern
One of the things that first drew me to pattern cutting, as a teenage dressmaking apprentice, were the options it opens for making beautiful, comfy, well made items of clothing from a collection of simple patterns.
The tunic which I designed, made and wrote the step by step instructions for in issue 41 of Simply Sewing magazine is a great example of this.
The principle of creating the pattern is based on taking body measurements, adding ease, and plotting points, which are then joined together, to create a pattern that fits just as you want it to.
I’ve returned to the same pattern, used to make the dress worn by the model, and decided I didn’t want the V neck as low, therefore made measurement C to H 15cm and as I wanted a T shirt, not a dress, made it 61 cm in length.
The instructions have been re published in Gathered and can be followed here
